Shujinko means hero or heroine in Japanese, and that’s because Melbourne’s first 24-hour ‘Tokyo Tonkotsu’-style ramen restaurant wants to make you the star.
Its motto is, “Put your heart into the noodles and your love into the soup” and as such, both are hand-made. The soup’s uniqueness lies in the fact that, unlike Hakata Tonkotsu, which adds bones to a salt-based soup, Shujinko uses a soy sauce base, which results in a lighter broth with wider appeal.
Popular dishes include Ramen, Karakuchi (spicy) Ramen and Black Ramen, but you should also try the new Hiyashi Tantanmen ($15.80 and only served until 9 pm) and the Tsukemen ($14.50).
From 9pm to 9am, the menu switches to an izakaya-style offering, with the Karaage ($13.80) and Chashu yaki ($12.80) being especially hot sellers.
As it’s licensed and open 24 hours, Shujinko is also an ideal stop if you’re bar hopping or have missed your train.
