What is Onigirazu?
Onigirazu was originally introduced in book 22 of the manga ‘Cooking Papa’ (published by Kodansha) as a “super easy onigiri”.
In 2014, it suddenly appeared high on the list of ranked search terms on popular Japanese recipe site Cookpad, garnering a lot of attention. In 2015, Onigirazu took out the major prize at the Cookpad Awards and there are currently around 2000 Onigirazu recipes now on the site.
It also won the ‘Dish of 2015′ award from Gurunavi Souken and the Japanese Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries is inviting Onigirazu recipe submissions from the public, among other promotional efforts.
