Portello Rosso

(Las Pescados, Las Verduras and Las Carnes from $4.50 to $13.50)

Las Pascados

Crispy Skin Pork Belly

I used to stop by one of the standing bars near my work after hours and warmed

myself up with nibbles and a glass of wine for the road when I was in Japan.

With its cold winds, every winter brings me back to those days,

when I could forget about the chill with a glass of alcohol and tasty appetizers to compliment..

After 5 years of becoming a Melbournian,

I finally found a place where I can experience just a few moments of my winter days in Japan.

At Portello Rosso, meaning Red Door in Spanish, a heavy red door marks its entrance.

The place is hidden quietly in an alley between some buildings on Little Bourke St.

The ambiance of this small restaurant is homely and comfortable,

making me feel as though welcome, am glad you found us when I entered.

Portello Rosso specializes in tapas and a variety of wines and beers,

mainly originating from Spain.

The place is usually crowded with regular customers and

peckish people who are seeking an oasis before heading home.

There are various stories about the beginning of tapas. One story states that the

tapas tradition began in medieval Europe around 750 years ago.

King Alfonso X of Castile recovered from an illness by drinking wine with

small snack between meals.

Since then, the king ordered that taverns would not be allowed to serve wine to

customers unless it was accompanied by a small snack or tapas.

On my visit, head chef Mr. Aaron Whitney, served us a variety of tapas from his

personal recommendations.

If you find it difficult to decide what to order from the

wide range of dishes, we recommend Charcuterie Plate, which is 4 different tapas

dishes from chefs choice, as your first selection. Chorizo imported from Spain is

absolutely the highlight of tapas dishes.

Not too spicy, I found it had an exquisite seasoning of sweetness, as it is cooked with honey,

and saltiness, which spread through my mouth and opened my appetite.

Each dish, such as homemade smoke cured duck, has a rich smoky aroma,

which enhances the deep flavour of the dish.

Other menu selections are categorized into 3 different varieties, Las Pascados,

a seafood tapas, Las Verduras, a vegetable tapas, and Las Carnes, the meat tapas .

The especially Crispy Skin Pork Belly is something you cannot avoid.

Crisp, roasted pork skin and slow cooked pork belly with garlic cream are mouth watering.

The great thing about this place is you can order these dishes in one serve,

so that you can enjoy many different tastes.

I would suggest going to Portello Rosso during lunch time as it is relatively quiet.

Authentic tapas dishes which are cooked by the head chef Aaron, who has been

trained in Spain, and some friendly conversation with the staff, it wont take long to

forget the cold weather.

It seems the story of the King Alfonso X is not necessary just a legend.
