In 2019, Izakaya Chuji celebrates its 30th birthday. Izakayas in Japan are traditionally places that serve drinks, and food that matches it. They’re places you drop in after work to relax, or visit with a group of friends. Izakaya Chuji owner Andre Bishop was the first to bring izakaya culture here to Australia 30 years ago and popularise it. Andre is a qualified kikisakeshi (sake sommelier), and truly loves sake, to the point of opening up the Nihonshu Shochu & Sake Bar next door, where you can enjoy sake at the bar in chilled surroundings.
Inside Izakya Chuji you’ll see a wide range of Japanese beer and shochu, not just sake. In total there are over 70 varieties of drinks to choose from, and the menu, which includes beer snacks, fried food, grilled food and donburi, stretches to over 100 dishes. Prices are reasonable too. There’s so much to choose from, you might actually feel a bit lost, but that’s part of the fun. If you arrive early enough, you can enjoy Happy Hour, and gyoza are half price on Mondays, among many other specials.
One particularly popular option is the sushi counter. Enjoying a drink while watching a sushi chef at work is something else, but even if that’s not your thing, you can always chow down on some ramen, udon, soba or other dishes after your drinks and enjoy the authentic izakaya atmosphere.

今月はオープン30周年を迎えた「居酒屋忠治」。
2019年に30周年を迎えた居酒屋忠治。居酒屋は酒類とそれに合った料理を提供する飲食店のことで、日本では、仕事帰りにふらりと気軽に寄れ、友達を誘ってグループでも行ける場所として定着しています。この“居酒屋文化”を最初にオーストラリアに持って来て広めたのが、オーナーのアンドレビショップさん。利き酒師でもあり、日本酒をこよなく愛する人物です。居酒屋忠治は、彼が選んだ日本酒が飲める「Nihonshu Shochu &Sake bar」も併設しており、こちらでは、落ち着いた雰囲気の中、カウンターでお酒が楽しめます。
居酒屋忠治には、日本酒はもちろんのこと、日本のビール、焼酎が揃っています。飲み物は70種類以上、メニューは、つまみ、揚げ物、焼き物、丼物など100種類以上と豊富な上にリーズナブル。どれにしようか、迷うのも楽しみのひとつ。しかも、早めの時間にHappy Hour が設けられていたり、月曜日は餃子が半額で楽しめるなど、お客を喜ばせる工夫もいっぱい。
この12月には3店舗目をオープン予定、それぞれのお店のコンセプトも明確になり、状況に合わせて利用しやすくなります。市内Liverpool Street店は酒類が豊富。お勧めは、豚の角煮や鶏の唐揚げなどのおつまみとお酒が選べるSake Banquet $19～、タパスと蕎麦が選べるIzakaya Banquet $65（2人で）があります。ランチは、蕎麦とミニライスボウルのセットがボリューム満点で人気。
そして、人気があるのは「Sushi counter」。シェフが寿司や刺身を作る手さばきを見ながらの食事は格別です。お酒を飲んだ後、しめにラーメン、うどん、そばまで揃っているお店、まさに「日本の居酒屋ここにあり」。さあ、今夜もちょっと寄って行こうかなー！
