According to the old Japanese calendar, September 13 was known as‘Juusanya’ (The 13th Night), and people used to offer the beans they’d harvested during that day to the gods, in an event known as ‘Mame Meigetsu’ (Bean Harvest Moon). When Japan switched to the Gregorian calendar, the date changed to October 13, and the entire day was renamed‘Mame no Hi’ or ‘Bean Day’, with the whole of October designated ‘Mame Gekkan’, or ‘Bean Month’. Therefore, we thought we’d put together a feature all about these nutritious morsels to help portray them in a new light.
