カジュアル 豪州英語辞典 - [ S ] Part 1
普通の英語辞典には載っていないオーストラリア独自の
かなりカジュアルな50の言い回し(Australianisms)を取り上げてみました。
これでオージー達の会話の意味がわかるかも。
ただし、使用する相手と場面は気を付けて。
Sandgroper [名] WA 州出身の人、人達。(直訳:砂を手触る、暗中模索;WA は砂漠が多い州だから) |
例:Yes, next week it’ s east versus west as Swans take on the sandgropers at the SCG. 来週は SCG で西対東、スワンズ対フリーマントルだ。 |
Schoolies [名] 大学入学テスト(VCE)後に、パーティーのために QLD 州に行く学生達。 (Schoolies は school=学校から生まれた、学生達という意だが、Gold Coast に学校 で旅行することに最も使われる) |
例:Every year, thousands of high school graduates descend on the Gold Coast for schoolies week. 毎年、大勢の高校卒業生が、卒業パーティーをするためにゴール ドコーストに押し寄せる。 |
Selling like hotcakes [形] とても売れている。(直訳:焼きたてのケーキのごとく売られている) |
例:Up until a year ago large gas guzzlers were still selling like hotcakes. Now look at them ‒ no one’ s buying them. 1年前までは、大きな燃費の悪い車がとても売れ ていたが、今は誰も買わないだろう。 |
Septic [名] Yank、アメリカ人。(Septic Tank=浄化槽という言葉から生まれた俗語) |
例:Bloody septics. All they do is wonder round asking where Rialto Tower is. I wish they’ d just get a map. アメリカ人ってばさ。皆、迷子になって「リアルト・タワーはどこだ」と聞くんだよ。 さっさと地図を買って欲しいよな。 |
Sickie / Chuck a sickie [名] 病気のふりをして仕事を休むこと。ずる休み。Sick day の短縮。 |
例:Where were you yesterday? I didn’ t see you all day. 昨日は見掛けなかったけ れど、どうしていたの? Don’t tell anyone, but I chucked a sickie and went and saw the Grand Prix. 誰にも言わないで。実はズル休みをして F1を見に行っていた んだよ。 |
