Ocha

(Oysters (Half doz) $18)

(Chocolate pavlova with fresh cream and fruits $15.50)

Time ticks away surprisingly fast each day.

The day begins and before you know it, the outside world is cloaked in darkness.

The sun goes down very quickly in early autumn in Melbourne soon after daylight saving ends.

The season of hibernation for Melbournians starts shortly after.

There is a place in Hawthorn you still want to visit even though in a cold winter we tend to turn

into a houseplant!

Without constant reminders, Ocha is one of the popular Japanese restaurants that many Japanese food

fans flock to. It moved from Kew last year and the restaurant has expanded.

I pushed open the front door to find out the reason it has been so loved by many people for many years.

I tried three dishes recommended by the owner-chef, Yasu Yoshida. Antipasto,

beautifully decorated on a Japanese plate, is the star attraction at Ocha.

Using seasonal fresh ingredients so the dishes of appetizers slightly changing each day,

it is a little surprise, particularly for regular customers.

One days dish may be Zucchini Flower & Calamari Mousse Tempura, Japanese Hot Spring Quail Egg,

Grilled Prawn with Spicy Mayo, Octopus and Orange Salad, and more

Each dish is small and delicate yet without uncompromising seasoning.

I should say it is an exclusive nibbles to go with alcohol. The second dish, oysters, is deliciously

cooked in variety of six different flavours. Fresh Tassie oysters are cooked with

authentic Japanese flavours like ponzu and yuzu served fresh, and others are

grilled with the topping of an unique combination of wasabi and cheese sauce.

A combination of miso and bacon topping, Miso Patrick, was my first topping to try.

Rich and creamy oysters with these ingredients spread in my mouth and would be a perfect marriage with

wine.

The dessert, Chocolate Pavlova, totally changed my stereotyped image of pavlova.

Its a great size to share. All dishes are gently priced despite the extra work put into them.

Chef Yoshidas parents used to run an eatery and he had always been seeing a

few customers there. Since then, he has been dreaming that my restaurant should be always busy with

customers. Now it has become a reality and he runs a place where it is difficult to make a reservation.

He says, I am willing to attend to every need of the customers but keep the decent Japanese taste.

Ocha itself is based on the fruits of the trusted relationships he has been building up with the customers

after 16 years of his business.

No question about it! But I would suggest to you to make early reservations.
