Welcome to the Japanese Restaurant Guide!

I’m very pleased to be able to bring you this, the sixth annual edition of the Japanese Restaurant Guide.

Since Japanese cuisine’s recognition as an Intangible Cultural Asset by UNESCO in December 2013, we’ve seen new concepts in Japanese food emerging in Melbourne. This year, we’re showcasing a lot of these establishments, such as the new ramen and udon restaurants we’ve seen arrive. Of course, we’ll also be bringing you the established shops you know and love.

When you talk about Japanese cuisine, it isn’t just about seasonality or quality of ingredients, it’s also about passing on techniques and history and evolving in a flexible manner.

Here in Melbourne too, people’s understanding of Japanese food culture is evolving and deepening, and it is my wish that people continue to make it a part of our diverse food culture.

In addition to this booklet, we’ve also upgraded the guide’s website and will continually update it with new information and restaurants, so please check it out.
