ell, really, this year was as close to a perfect year as it could've been. The two best teams Geelong and St Kilda played in the grand final, and the best player in the competition Gary Ablett jnr won the Brownlow medal (the M.V.P award for AFL football). After watching the vote count and medal presentation on T.V, one fact stood out that made me laugh. Gary Ablett was the winner with 30 votes. The Melbourne Football Club had a grand total of 31 votes, Richmond, the Kangaroos and Fremantle didn't do much better.
If you can't say anything nice, you shouldn't say anything, but questions did emerge. Could anyone support these teams without pulling their hair out? Is there any hope next year for any of these teams? Optimistically, the answer is "maybe". Realistically, the answer is no, but there is a silver lining.... well, sort of.
Richmond are likely to make some hard decisions on some of its older players, but hopefully will give Matthew Richardson another season. Don't laugh, he can still run all day, and as long as they play him on the wing and give him free reign to push up and down, he will be something for the Tigers fans to cheer.
Melbourne too, have some small reasons to smile. They are Jurrah and Wonaeamirri. If you haven't seen these guys, they are awesome. Unless one or both of these guys are playing, Melbourne footy matches are just absolutely unwatchable, but if one of these guys is on the field you just can't turn away or stop smiling, just fantastic.
As for Fremantle, well....actually I can't think of anything good to say about Fremantle, same goes for the Kangaroos.
For the rest of us, there is the possibility of flags and finals, and no matter what team you barrack for, everyone can look forward to more "Junior boy" Cyril Rioli!
